The first step in decontaminating ice is to remove the exterior of the core using a sterile band saw. The ice core is then cleaned with 95% ethanol. This is followed by a rinse in sterile water. Once the ice core is clean, it is prepared for microbial analysis.
Next, the genome content of five glacier-ice viruses was analyzed to determine the relationship of these viruses with other viruses. These viruses are known to infect Methylobacterium, which is found in glacier ice. Two of these viruses were singletons, while three were grouped into three VCs, each with eight prophages. The three viruses were also associated with air and drinking-water viruses. The fourth was associated with a soil-virus.
